Black Corflute® Sheets: The Sustainable Choice for Industrial Packaging & Protection

4 mins read 11 June 2026
Not all Corflute® is white. Australia's biggest-selling Corflute® colour is black.

When most people think of Corflute®, they picture white signage.

It’s understandable. White Corflute® has long been the material of choice for election campaigns, real estate signs, packaging and printed graphics.

But what surprises many people is that black Corflute® is actually one of the most widely used colours in the market and, in many industrial applications, the preferred choice.

Australian made Black Corflute® is used every day in industries ranging from manufacturing and logistics to construction, warehousing and transport. While it may not always be visible to consumers, it plays a critical role in protecting products, improving supply chain efficiency and supporting Australia’s circular economy.

Why Black?

Why is black Corflute® so popular?

Black Corflute® offers a unique combination of sustainability, UV durability and manufacturing efficiency. It can incorporate high levels of recycled content, provides exceptional outdoor stability and is ideal for industrial applications where performance matters more than colour.

Some of the most common applications for black Corflute sheets include:

Unlike temporary signage applications, many of these products using black Corflute boards are designed to be reused repeatedly, extending the life of the material and reducing waste.

Why Industrial Users Choose Black Corflute®

While white Corflute® remains the preferred choice for printed signage and display applications, black Corflute® has become the material of choice for many industrial, packaging and protection applications. Its ability to incorporate high levels of recycled content, combined with exceptional UV stability and durability, makes it one of the most versatile polypropylene sheet materials available.

Black Corflute® in Action

One of the reasons Black Corflute® is such a popular choice is its versatility. While many people associate Corflute® with signage, black Corflute® is quietly working behind the scenes in countless industrial, retail and recycling applications across Australia.

Retail Waste & Recycling Systems

Black Corflute® is widely used to manufacture durable collection and recycling bins for retail, sporting and community programs. Its professional appearance, high recycled content and excellent durability make it ideal for collection systems designed to withstand regular public use.

Reusable Warehouse & Distribution Solutions

From warehouse picking bins and tote boxes to reusable transport containers, black Corflute® helps businesses protect products while reducing reliance on single-use packaging. Lightweight yet strong, it is ideal for returnable packaging systems that move products safely through the supply chain.

Cable Reels & Industrial Components

Black Corflute® is frequently fabricated into custom industrial products such as cable reel flanges, protective components, separators and handling systems. Its strength-to-weight ratio and ease of fabrication make it a practical alternative to heavier materials in many industrial applications.

Supermarket & Retail Handling Systems

Major retailers utilise black Corflute® in back-of-house handling systems, stock replenishment carts and product movement applications. The material’s durability, moisture resistance and easy-clean surface help it perform in demanding retail environments where equipment is used every day.

Pallet Layer Pads & Material Protection

One of the largest applications for black Corflute® is pallet layer pads and protective sheet products. Used to separate products during storage and transport, these sheets help prevent damage while providing a reusable alternative to disposable packaging materials.

Supporting Australia’s Circular Economy

Many of these applications benefit from the high levels of recycled content that can be incorporated into black Corflute®. Because recycled polypropylene from a wide variety of sources can be recovered and remanufactured into black sheet, these products help keep valuable materials in use for longer and support a more circular approach to manufacturing.

From recycling bins and retail handling systems to pallet protection and industrial packaging, Black Corflute® demonstrates why it has become one of Australia’s most trusted and widely used polypropylene sheet materials.

The Sustainability Advantage

Black Corflute® sheets are one of the most environmentally responsible polypropylene options available.

Because black is capable of incorporating recycled materials from a broad range of sources, it is ideally suited to circular manufacturing. Recovered polypropylene from multiple colours and applications can be processed and reused in the manufacture of black Corflute sheet, helping to maximise resource recovery and reduce landfill.

Corex’s Black Corflute® boards contain approximately 68% recycled content and can contain up to 100% recycled content depending on the application and specification requirements.

This makes black Corflute® an important part of Corex’s closed-loop recycling model, where used polypropylene materials are collected in Corpak® recycling bins, recycled at Corex Recycling, and returned to manufacturing as valuable new products.

Rather than becoming waste, materials are kept in circulation for longer, supporting a more sustainable future for Australian manufacturing.

Why Black Is the Best Colour for Recycled Content

Not all colours are equal when it comes to recycling.

White and coloured Corflute® sheets require carefully controlled raw materials to achieve colour consistency. Black, however, can incorporate recycled materials from a much wider range of sources because the finished colour naturally masks variations in the recycled feedstock.

This makes black the most efficient colour for vertically integrating recycled polypropylene into new products.

In simple terms, more recycled material can be recovered and reused when manufacturing black recycled Corflute® boards, making it one of the most practical and sustainable options available.

Superior UV Stability

Another often-overlooked benefit of black Corflute® is its natural UV performance.

Most coloured polypropylene sheets require additional UV inhibitors to help protect the material from degradation caused by sunlight. Black Corflute® sheets typically provide good UV resistance due to the presence of carbon black pigments, which help protect the material from ultraviolet radiation.

As a result, black Corflute® is often considered one of the UV-stable colours in the Corflute® range and is well suited to many outdoor and industrial applications.

Black Corflute®

Black Corflute® and the Circular Economy

Black Corflute® is uniquely suited to circular manufacturing because recycled polypropylene from a wide range of colours and products can be recovered and incorporated into new black sheet. This allows more material to stay in productive use for longer, helping reduce waste while supporting Australian manufacturing.

At Corex, returned polypropylene materials are processed through our recycling operations and remanufactured into new products, creating a practical example of circular economy principles in action.
